Municipality orders retailers to return one-time use mobile chargers to countries of origin

DUBAI – Dubai has banned the importation and sale of disposable phone chargers in the municipality because the devices pose an environmental burden

Aside from this, municipality officials said users of disposable phone chargers are at the losing end for buying the devices because of their short lifespan.

The prohibition was contained in a directive issued by Dubai director-general Hussain Nasser Lootah.

Rehda Salman, director of the Dubai health and safety department, pointed out that disposable phone chargers “add to the quantity of electronic waste in the general waste, which constitutes an environmental burden.”

“The municipality calls upon all establishments in the emirate not to import or sell any disposable and non-rechargeable one-time use mobile phone chargers,” he added.

Salman said retailers should return the disposable phone chargers to their country of origin or re-export them within one month from the date when the municipality circular was issued. GAC/Expat Media
