Six people rescued while an undetermined number of people are missing

MARGAO – Ten people drowned while six others were rescued when a portion of a steel footbridge over the Zuari River in Sanvordem collapsed early last night.

The footbridge was adjacent to an old bridge built over the same waterway.

The incident happened while police were fishing out a body of a man who allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the river.

The footbridge gave way due to the sheer weight of the people who were watching the police operation.

Some of the people managed to swim safely to shore while others were carried away by the river’s strong current along with those who were supposed to rescue them.

According to local officials, a number of people who fell into the river are missing.

Public Works Minister Ramkrishna Dhavalikar said: “People were warned not to use the (foot) bridge. Almost 100 jumped over from the old bridge to this footbridge.” GAC/Expat Media
